A recent post on r/bangalore’s community has sparked a discussion among foodies about the restaurants in Bangalore that have more hype than actual taste. An image in the thread summed it up nicely with two bars: one labeled “Taste” at the bottom and another labeled “Hype” way above it.
The Hype Behind the Reality
The conversation highlights how some restaurants, despite being popular and having social media buzz, don’t deliver on flavor and quality. One Reddit user said about a much-hyped restaurant, “Before I even opened the thread I knew this would be the answer. Having said that, while Rameshwaram is super hyped and the amount of ghee they put will prepone your heart attack by 10-15 years, there is still something about the food that makes me go back every once in a while. Initially I didn’t like it, but after a couple of times I do.”
Another user disagreed: ” I love rameshwaram eventhough they make unhealthy food. It tastes real good to me and i have had open butter masala dosa from every other place in bangalore and this is the top for me.”
Mixed Reviews and Alternatives
Other Redditors were more critical about their experiences at popular places. One user shared a bad experience: “Street 1522…I hosted my sister’s 25th there and I kid you not everything I ordered was shit from drinks to food to dessert. I was so sad seeing my sister’s disappointed face. It’s like how my dadi used to say ‘Uchi dukan fiki pakwan’. On the other hand totally recommend FLO church street, everything we ordered was bomb in taste.”
Another user adde,: “I am from Kerala and went to the restaurant after hearing about the hype. All dishes were experimental, and either were very good or very bad. The good dishes are the recipies available in public and in other restaurants and the bad dishes were quite bad and not worth paying for their experiments. Like if you go to an open mic where a comedian tests their jokes the prices are quite low. You don’t expect them to be testing jokes with a full paying audience. Same way, you should not expect us to pay exorbitant prices for hit or misses. Dishes like fish nirvana, pal kappa were good but overall too hyped.”So true.
