Gurugram, often seen as the symbol of India’s modern urban aspirations, came to a standstill late Wednesday night after relentless rains battered the city, leading to large-scale flooding, paralyzed traffic, and chaos across upscale and suburban areas alike. The rain continued into Thursday, worsening the situation and triggering an outpouring of distress and anger on social media.

One of the most widely shared videos was posted by a resident living near the posh Golf Course Road area. Her video showed muddy water flooding both the road outside and the interiors of her upscale residence, destroying her furniture and belongings.

“What happened last night has left me completely shattered,” she begins, showing footage of the road outside her residence completely submerged under murky water. The camera then pans inside her home, where brown water has flooded the living room. Furniture, personal belongings, and appliances are seen either floating or submerged.

“I live near Golf Course Road—the area known for its upscale high-rises like DLF Camellias… But even here, this is the harsh reality of Gurugram,” she says, highlighting the irony of such a breakdown in a city often associated with wealth and modernity.

Recounting her return home from work that night, she explains, “When I returned, I found my car half-submerged in water. But what truly broke me was what I found inside my home. This is my home. A home I had carefully and lovingly set up after I moved in.”

Her voice cracks as she continues, “Everything that was on the floor—furniture, belongings—was floating, soaked, and destroyed.”

Concluding her post, she writes, “I have no words left. Just pain. Just disbelief. This is not just water damage. It’s emotional damage. And it’s real.”

Netizens responded with a mix of empathy and outrage. While some expressed heartbreak at her ordeal, others slammed the city’s poor planning and governance. “This city should be unitedly abandoned for lack of urban planning,” one user wrote. Another added, “Gurugram generates billions — this should not be its reality.”

The flooding wasn’t limited to luxury neighborhoods. Roads such as Golf Course Extension, Sohna Road, and Subhash Chowk were submerged under waist-deep water. Traffic came to a halt as several vehicles were left stranded and commuters were forced to wade through flooded streets or abandon their cars altogether.

Tragically, the downpour has also claimed lives. At least five people have reportedly died in rain-related incidents, including three who were electrocuted in separate cases — further fuelling public anger over the city’s crumbling infrastructure and inadequate disaster management.

As visuals of the chaos continue to flood social media, the incident has sparked a broader conversation around Gurugram’s readiness for extreme weather, even as it continues to attract investments, real estate buyers, and global companies.
