Avaada Group, one of the leading integrated energy platforms in India, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Government of Gujarat to invest Rs 40,000 crore to develop an aggregate 6,000 MW (6 GW) of renewable energy (RE) capacity in the state. Furthermore, the company also intends to set up a Green Hydrogen/Ammonia manufacturing unit to produce 1 MMT of green ammonia in the state.

Kishor Nair, CEO, Avaada Energy, said, “The proposed investment to generate 6GW of renewable energy is focused on the combination of wind and solar energy production and we are still considering the proportion of wind and solar energy regarding this project. We do not have any final confirmation about the location of this hybrid energy project but probably, the project will be located in Kutch and its adjacent areas as that region of the state has an abundance of barren and waste land.”

Talking about the land requirement for this ambitious project, Nair said, “Normally, 4.25 acres of land is required for generating 1 MW of solar energy while generation of 1 MW of wind energy requires around 7 acres of land. So, given this, to generate 6,000 MW of hybrid energy, we will require around 10,000 acres of land (depending on the combination of solar and wind energy).”

Nair also talked about the ongoing renewable energy projects of around 1,000 MW by Avaada Energy in the state. He said, “We are currently working on three projects with a capacity of around 1,000 MW. We are developing a Rs 1,500 crore facility to generate 320 MW of RE in Surendra Nagar.

We have acquired land for a 400 MW capacity plant and we are also working on a facility in Jamnagar district. The timeline for completing this phase is around 18 months from now which means that this 1,000 MW capacity is expected to be completed by mid 2025. Furthermore, we are planning to complete more than 50% of our total commitment by 2026-27 and to complete the 6,000 MW RE capacity generation within the next 5 years.”

Commenting on the production of Green Hydrogen/Ammonia, Nair told FE, “Avaada Group is targeting to produce 4 MMT of Green Ammonia by 2030. We have already started working on a manufacturing unit with a capacity of 0.5 MMT on the East coast of the country. Apart from this we are looking forward to setting up our Green Hydrogen/Ammonia manufacturing unit with a capacity of around 1 MMT in the state of Gujarat.”

He said that the things are under consideration with the Government of Gujarat regarding the terms and conditions and land allocation for Green Hydrogen/Ammonia production.
