Yograj Singh former India all-rounder, has attributed his son Yuvraj Singh’s guidance, alongside Shubman Gill’s father, as a pivotal factor in Gill’s recent appointment as the 37th captain of the Indian Test team. Gill, succeeding Rohit Sharma, who recently announced his retirement from Tests, is set to lead India in the upcoming World Test Championship cycle, commencing with the tour of England from June 20.

Following Gill’s elevation to the captaincy, Yograj Singh extended his congratulations, emphasising the significant role played by Yuvraj Singh in Gill’s burgeoning career.

Yograj credits Yuvraj and Shubhman’s father

“The credit for Shubman Gill’s performance goes to his father and Yuvraj Singh,” Yograj Singh told ANI. “If Shubman Gill has become the captain today and will stay for a long time, Yuvraj Singh’s guidance will play and has played an essential role in that.”

Gill has been a prodigy, having been meticulously trained by his father from a young age. His development further benefited from training sessions with Yuvraj Singh during the COVID-19 lockdown in 2020, a period widely seen as crucial for his growth as a batsman.

Shubhman Gill’s achievement

At just 25 years old, Gill brings a solid Test record to his new role, having scored 1893 runs in 32 matches at an average of 35.05, including five centuries and seven half-centuries. He also has prior captaincy experience, leading in five first-class matches. His leadership skills are currently on display in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL 2025), where he is successfully captaining the Gujarat Titans, who are currently at the top of the points table with 18 points from 13 matches.

Gill will be joined by Rishabh Pant as his deputy, marking a new era for the Indian Test team. This young leadership duo has been tasked with steering the team forward following the recent retirements of several prominent senior players, including Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and Ravichandran Ashwin. The upcoming England tour will be a crucial test as they embark on this new chapter in Indian cricket.
