India skipper and batting icon Rohit Sharma achieved a milestone on Sunday, becoming the fifth Indian cricketer to make 500 appearances in international cricket. This feat was registered during the first ODI against Australia at Perth, adding another feather to his 17-year international career.

Rohit joins an elite group which includes Sachin Tendulkar (664 matches), Virat Kohli (550 matches), MS Dhoni (538) and Rahul Dravid (509). Sharma is now the 11th cricketer globally to reach the 500-match mark across formats, as per a report by The Indian Express.

Rohit Sharma’s career milestones

Sharma’s career spans all three formats, Tests, ODIs and T20Is since he made his debut in 2007. With 19,700 runs and several record-breaking innings, including three double centuries in ODIs. His ability to balance aggression and consistency has cemented his place among India’s most trusted performers.

Rohit and Kohli continue to be the senior-most players in a team gradually infused with younger talents. Rohit’s journey from his debut under Rahul Dravid’s captaincy to leading India in all three formats reflects discipline and resilience.

As per the ANI report, Rohit needs 54 runs to cross former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly (11,221 runs) and will become India’s third-highest ODI run achiever. In 273 ODIs, Rohit has scored 11,168 runs at a stunning average of 48.76 and a strike rate of 92.80. He has scored 32 centuries and has hit 58 fifties, including a score of 264 runs.

India vs Australia 1st ODI stalled

Just three more centuries worth of runs will make Rohit the 14th player to surpass 20,000 international runs and only the fourth Indian to do so. He has a total of 49 international centuries to his name, his next being his 50th, joining the exclusive club of just nine cricketers worldwide, including Virat Kohli (82) and Sachin Tendulkar (100).

India’s innings were halted to 25 for three when heavy downpours interrupted the match. As per the latest update from PTI, Kohli departed without scoring, falling to Mitchell Starc. He faced just eight deliveries, whereas skipper Rohit just managed to score eight runs before being out by Josh Hazlewood. Later, Shubham Gill was dismissed the leg side off Nathan Ellis for 10, leaving Shreyas Iyer at (2) and Axar Patel (0) unbeaten as the play was temporarily suspended.
