Rio Olympics 2016: India’s Archer Atanu Das on Tuesday won his second round encounter 6-4 in a thrilling finish to enter quarter-finals of the men’s archery event at the Rio Olympics. Das first beat Nepal’s Jit Bahadur Muktan 6-0 in the round of 32 encounter. Then he moved into the third round of the men’s individual archery event after beating Cuba’s Adrian Andres Puentes Perez 6-4. He won the first two sets 28-26 and 29-26 after Puentes slowed down with four 8-pointers of the six arrows. In the 3rd set, both archers were at 18-18 after the first two arrows but after Puentes’ 9, Atanu could muster an eight for a close finish. Considered as a virtual no-hoper in the Indian contingent, Das kept his hopes. He is the only male participant from India’s archery team and is competing only in the individual section as the men’s team had failed to qualify from the World Championship.
Atanu , 24-year-old archer, comes from West Bengal. He started archery at the age of 14 and moved to Tata Archery Academy in 2008, where he was trained under the coach Lim Chae Wong. Atanu is currently employed in Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited in Kolkata.
