The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) mistakenly mixed up the names of Mumbai batters and brothers Sarfaraz Khan and Musheer Khan on the opening day of the Ranji Trophy 2025. The scorers mistook Musheer for Sarfaraz and made his score zero in Mumbai’s opening match against Jammu and Kashmir at the Sher-e-Kashmir Cricket Stadium in Srinagar on October 15.
Name mismatch
Social media quickly picked up the error made by the scorers, where the BCCI website initially showed Sarfaraz Khan opening the batting for Mumbai and being dismissed for a duck by Jammu and Kashmir fast bowler Auqib Nabi. However, it was later clarified that Musheer, who had opened the batting and went back to the pavilion as early as the third delivery on the opening day of the contest.
BCCI corrects the error
In response, BCCI quickly realised the error and corrected Sarfaraz’s name with Musheer’s in the scorecard. However, the cricket fans started to wonder why Mumbai would send Sarfaraz to open the batting when the senior batter is looking for a return to the Indian Test team as a middle-order player.
Notably, Sarfaraz walked out to bat at No. 5 and struck three boundaries early in his innings, transferring the pressure back onto Jammu and Kashmir. Mumbai lost early wickets in the Ranji Trophy 2025 against hosts Jammu and Kashmir. Ayush Mhatre started well, scoring 28 off 55, but was soon caught behind off Yudhvir Singh Charak.
