Delhi Capitals on Tuesday (December 23) announced the appointment of India batter Jemimah Rodrigues as their captain for the 2026 season of the Women’s Premier League (WPL). The decision marks a new chapter for the franchise, which has finished runners-up in all three editions of the tournament so far.

A part of the Capitals setup since the inaugural WPL season, Rodrigues was the franchise’s first pick at the auction and has remained a central figure in the side. The 25-year-old recently enjoyed a landmark year with the Indian team, playing a starring role in India’s ICC Women’s World Cup triumph. Her unbeaten 127 in the semi-final against Australia powered India to a world-record chase of 339, cementing her reputation as a big-match player.

In Delhi Capitals colours, Rodrigues has featured in 27 WPL matches, scoring 507 runs at a strike rate of 137.67. She has been part of all three finals the franchise has reached, though the title has so far eluded them. Known for her intensity and energy on the field, Rodrigues has also emerged as one of the most popular faces among Capitals supporters.

Parth Jindal, co-owner of Delhi Capitals, said the appointment was a natural progression. “Jemimah has been with us since day one, and there was never any doubt that she would one day captain the team,” he said, adding that her leadership qualities extend beyond her performances on the field. Jindal expressed confidence that Rodrigues could help the side “cross the line” after three successive final defeats.

Delhi Capitals chairman and co-owner Kiran Kumar Grandhi echoed the sentiment, describing Rodrigues as someone who embodies the values of the franchise. He highlighted her role in the team’s journey so far and backed her to take the side a step further in the upcoming season.

How did Rodrigues react after being named the captain?

Rodrigues said it was “an absolute honour” to be named captain, calling Delhi Capitals a franchise close to her heart. While acknowledging that she would miss some players from the previous cycle, she said she was excited to build new memories with a refreshed squad. “We have a strong group, and I can’t wait to get going,” she added.

At the international level, Rodrigues has played 112 T20Is for India, scoring 2,375 runs, and 59 ODIs, with 1,749 runs to her name.

Delhi Capitals will begin their WPL 2026 campaign against Mumbai Indians on January 10 in Navi Mumbai.
