Dubai is hosting an unusually tense night of cricket as heavy security measures have been put in place for the India vs Pakistan Asia Cup game. The match will begin at 8 pm. According to reports, From Friday morning, multiple security checkpoints were activated around the venue. According to a Moneycontrol report, the number of personnel deployed is nearly triple compared to a regular match.
The restrictions extend even to spectators. Fans are reportedly not allowed to carry posters, flags, selfie sticks, large cameras or fireworks into the stadium. “We are conscious this situation isn’t normal and that’s why every kind of precaution is in place,” the report quoted a local as saying.
Public advisory issued
The city’s Events Security Committee has urged fans to cooperate, stressing that discipline and sportsmanship are non-negotiable. According to Dubai-based Gulf News, the committee has asked ticket-holders to arrive three hours before the start, follow parking guidelines and remember that entry will be allowed only once per valid ticket.
A long list of banned items has also been issued, including fireworks, sharp objects, umbrellas, scooters, glass items and pets. According to the Moneycontrol report, country flags and posters are also not allowed to be taken inside the stadium. The strict rules also apply to media persons covering the game. Breach of those protocols can lead to cancellation of accreditation, Moneycontrol reported.
Up to Dh30,000, three months prison
Those flouting the rules risk heavy penalties. Pitch invasions, violence, throwing objects, or abusive behaviour could result in fines ranging from Dh5,000 to Dh30,000 and up to three months in prison.
Mounted police will patrol the periphery of the stadium, while inside, frisking and bag checks will be stricter than ever, Gulf News reported. Officials said every unlawful act will be met with immediate and harsh action.
