India is reportedly looking to get Pakistan’s Mohsin Naqvi impeached from his Asian Cricket Council (ACC) president post. As per a News18 exclusive report on Wednesday, the BCCI is keen on pushing for the move amid the Asia Cup fiasco. The Pakistan Cricket Board chairman’s ACC post may be in trouble over allegations of protocol breach and violation of responsibilities as the council’s president.
BCCI pushing for Asian Cricket Council president’s impeachment, as per report
Following India’s undefeated Asia Cup streak in Dubai, the team’s celebrations had to go unfortunately on without a trophy, which is now in the PCB head’s possession. Team India ultimately refused to accept the trophy from the Pakistani interior minister on September 28 in light of heightened tensions between India and Pakistan spurred by the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack.
Given the current situation, News18 also cited top government sources suggesting that India is planning to take up the supposed trophy theft with UAE authorities. They are also expected to push for an official probe initiation in the wake of his conduct having politicised cricket administration and the renunciation of impartial governance in the process.
Mohsin Naqvi impeachment report comes after apology to BCCI
According to a prior India Today report, Naqvi appeared to change his stance at an ACC meeting on September 30 after having walked away with the silverware days ago. The Asian Cricket Council chief is also said to have apologised to the Board of Control for Cricket India (BCCI).
Despite the reported development, the fiasco is far from over, as Naqvi is said to have reiterated the stance that if India wanted the trophy, their captain Suryakumar Yadav, should collect it from the ACC’s office in Dubai.
India has since rejected the condition, with BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia saying, “We have decided not to accept the Asia Cup 2025 trophy from the ACC chairman, who happens to be one of the senior leaders of Pakistan. That was a conscious decision.”
“This does not give him the right to take the trophy and the medals with him. It is extremely unfortunate and unsportsmanlike. We hope the trophy medals will be returned to India as soon as possible.”
In an even more recent update on the issue, News18 also accessed the first image of the Asia Cup trophy from the ACC meeting on Wednesday.
