After Team India’s disappointing loss in the ICC World Cup cricket match against Australia on Sunday, Didar Singh Gill, the grandfather of Indian cricketer Shubman Gill, expressed confidence that the defeat would be “avenged” in the future.

He noted the high expectations placed on Team India and highlighted the need to address several shortcomings. Despite India’s unbeaten campaign in the 2023 WC, they suffered a six-wicket defeat against Australia in the summit clash.

Speaking to ANI on Sunday, Shubman Gill‘s grandfather said, “There was a lot of expectation from Team India, but it could not live up to that expectation. There are many shortcomings that need to be removed. No matter what, this defeat will be avenged in the future. The match remained one-sided.”

The Narendra Modi Stadium saw a large gathering of supporters hoping for India to end their decade-long wait for an ICC trophy win. However, Australia emerged victorious on the big day. Opting to bowl first, the Australian bowling attack collaborated to dismiss India for 240, with Travis Head delivering a standout century and securing Australia’s sixth ICC Cricket World Cup title.

In India’s innings, skipper Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and KL Rahul played crucial roles, posting significant scores on a challenging batting surface. Mitchell Starc, with figures of 3/55, stood out as Australia’s top bowler, supported by Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood.

Although India started well in the chase, reducing Australia to 47/3, Travis Head’s outstanding performance, along with Marnus Labuschagne’s contribution, guided Australia to a six-wicket victory. Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah took crucial wickets, but Travis Head was awarded the ‘Player of the Match’ for his century.
