Post Bangladesh’s exit from the ICC World Cup 2023, the defending champions England have now crashed out of the tournament after being defeated by Australia by 33 runs in Ahmedabad.

With this, the Australian team has jumped to the third position on the points table with 10 points and a net run rate of 0.924.

England won the toss and elected to bowl first. Prior to this match, England and Australia had faced each other in nine World Cup matches, out of which Australia won six and England won three.

Bowling first, England started well and took Travis Head and David Warner’s wickets pretty early in the game. However, the Australian team made a comeback and scored 113 runs before losing its third and fourth wicket.

Marnus Labuschagne gave Australia a good base before getting out after scoring 71 runs. Besides him, Cameron Green and Marcus Stoinis pushed the team’s score to a fighting score, giving England a target of 287 runs.

For England, Chris Woakes took the most number of wickets. While Woakes took four wickets, Adil Rashid and Mark Wood took two each. David Willey and Liam Livingstone both took one wicket.

England’s response

When the English team came to the field, Mitchell Starc dealt a double blow to them as they lost Jonny Bairstow and Joe Root cheaply right in the beginning. Dawid Malan and Ben Stokes took control of the game and scored half-centuries.

Adam Zampa picked up three wickets, while Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins took two each.

In this tournament, England lost all of their matches except one against Bangladesh on October 10.

In 2019, the last World Cup match between Australia and England was won by the latter.
