Indian Cricketer Bishan Singh Bedi: Former India captain and legendary spinner Bishan Singh Bedi has passed away at the age of 77, news agency PTI reported on Monday. Bedi was survived by his wife Anju, son Angad and daughter Neha.
Bedi was a veteran, who played 67 Tests in a 12-year-career which spanned between 1967 and 1979. He was an iconic figure in the cricket world and one of India’s most celebrated cricketers. He became well-known and one of the finest spin bowlers in the history of sport’s.
Together with Erapalli Prasanna, BS Chandrasekhar, and S. Venkataraghavan, he constituted the most formidable spin quartet in the annals of Indian cricket, a group that transformed the landscape of spin bowling on a global scale.
Commencing his Test career against Australia in 1969-70, Bedi concluded the series with an impressive tally of 21 wickets, setting the tone for a remarkable journey ahead. This momentum persisted as he claimed 25 wickets against England, an additional 18 against West Indies, and 22 more against England. His exceptional prowess continued, securing 25 and 31 wickets against England and Australia respectively, solidifying Bedi’s legacy as one of the most remarkable spinners of all time.
In the domestic arena, Bedi steered Delhi to consecutive Ranji Trophy triumphs in 1978-79 and 1980-81, showcasing his leadership prowess. Additionally, his remarkable stint in County cricket included 102 First-Class matches for Northamptonshire, where he notched an impressive 434 wickets from 1972 to 1977, cementing his stature as a giant in the sport.
Bedi was the manager of the Indian Cricket team for a brief time period in 1990 during tours of New Zealand and England. Along with being an icon on-field, he was also known for his commitment to cricket ethics, sportsmanship and his continued involvement in the game as a coach and mentor.
