Cape Verde, a tiny island country in Africa, has created history by qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. This marks the nation’s first time ever in the tournament. The capital city, Praia, was filled with excitement as thousands of people came out to celebrate the big moment.
This achievement is even more special because Cape Verde is such a small nation, with a population of only about 5.25 lakh. It is now the second-smallest country after Iceland to qualify for the World Cup finals.
Victory that sealed the dream
Cape Verde beat Eswatini 3-0 in Praia to secure their spot in the 2026 World Cup. They dominated Group B with 23 points, finishing above Cameroon – a team that has played in eight World Cups.
Coach Pedro Brito said the qualification was more than just a football victory. “Giving this happiness to these people is enormous. It’s a victory for all the Cape Verdean people and, above all, a victory for those who fought for our independence,” Brito said.
After the 1974 revolution in Portugal, the PAIGC became an influential political force in Cape Verde. Later that year, an agreement with Portugal set up a transitional government, leading to Cape Verde’s independence in 1975.
The streets of Praia turned into a giant party after the win. Fans danced to reggae and local funana music, honked car horns, and lit fireworks. FIFA president Gianni Infantino congratulated Cape Verde on their “historic moment,” saying that the achievement could inspire a new generation of football lovers across the country.
A journey of determination
Cape Verde’s road to qualification wasn’t easy. After drawing with Angola and losing to Cameroon, they bounced back to win five straight matches, sealing their place at the World Cup.
Team captain Ryan Mendes expressed his happiness, saying, “Honestly, I don’t have words to describe this moment. I’m very, very happy.”
Cape Verde first tried to qualify for the World Cup in 2002. Now, more than two decades later, their dream has finally come true – marking a proud moment for this small but spirited nation.
