A routine T20I in Bali turned historic on Tuesday as Indonesia fast bowler Gede Priandana rewrote the record books, producing a spell never before witnessed in international cricket. In the opening T20I against Cambodia, Priandana became the first bowler in T20I history to claim five wickets in a single over, a feat unmatched across both the men’s and women’s game.
No bowler in the history of the game, including the modern-day giants like Jasprit Bumrah and Rashid Khan, haven’t been able to achieve such a feat. However, for context, the quality of the opposition should also be taken into consideration to get a clearer picture.
Gede Priandana achieves the feat in 16th over
The defining moment arrived late in Cambodia’s pursuit of 168. With the visitors already wobbling, Priandana was introduced in the 16th over and promptly triggered a collapse that brought the innings to an abrupt end. Three wickets off his first three deliveries, including a hat-trick, left Cambodia stunned, and after a solitary dot ball, two more batters followed in quick succession. The over yielded just one run, a wide, as Indonesia stormed to a 60-run win.
Priandana’s achievement breaks new ground in a format where even the game’s most feared bowlers had fallen short of the mark. While Lasith Malinga, Rashid Khan, Curtis Campher and Jason Holder had previously managed four wickets in an over in T20 Internationals, the fifth dismissal had remained elusive, until now.
Milestone reached twice in men’s T20 cricket before
At the domestic level, the milestone had been reached only twice before in men’s T20 cricket. Al-Amin Hossain achieved it during Bangladesh’s Victory Day T20 Cup in 2013-14 and Abhimanyu Mithun replicated the feat for Karnataka in the 2019-20 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
Indonesia’s dominance was set up earlier with the bat, led by wicketkeeper Dharma Kesuma’s unbeaten 110 off 68 balls, an innings that featured eight boundaries and six sixes. Priandana, who partnered Kesuma at the top of the order, made a modest contribution before starring decisively with the ball.
