India has imposed restrictions on imports of products made from jute and flax in its various forms, from Bangladesh. The entry of such products will be allowed only through the Nhava Sheva seaport in Navi Mumbai, Maharashtra. India also barred imports of readymade garments and certain processed products from Bangladesh through land ports.
However, these restrictions will not apply to Bangladesh exports to Nepal and Bhutan that is transiting via India, a notification by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) said.
According to DGFT, even the re-exports of these goods to India from Nepal and Bhutan will not be permitted.
In April this year, India withdrew the transhipment facility to exports from Bangladesh to third countries through its ports and airports in response to the increased friction in ties between the two nations.
From May 2025 onwards, these products can now be imported only through Kolkata and Nhava Sheva ports.
Imports of fruit flavoured and carbonated drinks, processed food items, cotton yarn, cotton yarn waste, plastic goods and furniture were also barred from entering India through land customs stations in Assam, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura and West Bengal.
