Exports of mangoes from India to the US are back to normal after the error in one of the irradiation facilities was rectified, a senior official said Tuesday.
In one of the approved irradiation facilities based in Mumbai there was an error in recording of data related to the irradiation treatment carried out on May 8-9, leading to the eventual rejection of 12 mango consignments in the USA.
“This facility also sees the maximum volume of mangoes for irradiation destined to the US and the error was rectified on May 10. There was no impact on the other two irradiation facilities,” the official said. The error and its cause is being examined at senior level by the facility management.
The exports of mangoes to the USA are done under the Cooperative Service Agreement between APEDA and the USDA-Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service(APHIS). As per the work plan, procurement of mangoes is done from registered farms, which are then graded and sorted at recognised packhouses, then followed by fungicidal treatment of hot water and finally irradiated at USDA approved irradiation facilities, which are three, in the current year.
India’s exports of mangoes to the USA have shown an increase, registering a growth of 130%, with export value increasing from $4.36 million in 2022–23 to $10.01 million in 2023–24.
