The Central government has successfully procured 120.67 lakh tonnes of paddy from Punjab, representing 65 per cent of the estimated target for the ongoing Kharif Marketing Season (KMS) 2024-25. The procurement process, which began on October 1, 2024, is expected to continue until November 30, with the central government setting an overall target of 185 lakh tonnes for this season.
As of November 8, 2024, a total of 126.67 lakh tonnes of paddy have arrived at the mandis in Punjab. Of this, 120.67 lakh tonnes have been procured by state agencies and the Food Corporation of India (FCI). The government is purchasing the paddy at a minimum support price (MSP) of Rs 2,320 per quintal for Grade ‘A’ paddy, ensuring fair compensation for farmers.
To date, the procurement has amounted to Rs 27,995 crore, benefiting approximately 6.58 lakh farmers in Punjab. This move aligns with the government’s continued commitment to supporting the farming community and ensuring their welfare during the harvest season.
In addition to this, 4,839 millers have applied for the shelling of paddy, and 4,743 millers have already been allotted work by the Punjab government. The procurement process is being conducted across 2,927 designated mandis and temporary yards set up throughout the state to facilitate smooth transactions.
The smooth and efficient procurement process has been aided by the timely lifting of paddy from the mandis, with more paddy being lifted than the daily arrivals. With the government prioritizing the convenience of farmers, the process is progressing seamlessly. This organised and systematic approach aims to reduce the farmers’ burdens and ensure that they receive timely payments for their produce.
As the KMS 2024-25 continues, the successful procurement so far serves as a testament to the government’s efforts to support the agricultural sector and ensure that farmers receive due compensation for their hard work.
