India’s public procurement platform Government e-Marketplace (GeM) will add a global tender enquiry feature in its portal by the end of the current financial year, as access to government contracts is opened up for counties with which trade agreements have been finalised or being negotiated.
“We are adding the global tender enquiry feature…(as) a lot of trade talks are happening, so this functionality is relevant,” GeM CEO Mihir Kumar told reporters here.
FTA-driven market access for global and Indian firms
India has opened up its government procurement for the UK in the recent Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) that was signed last month. The agreement also offers similar access to Indian companies. Earlier the India-UAE Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) had liberalised the government procurement market for both sides. The future FTAs are also expected to have chapters on government procurement.
CETA will open up $ 122 billion worth of market for Indian companies without any discrimination. India’s commitment under the agreement on public procurement would open up $ 114 billion market for the suppliers in the UK.
Adoption surge, record transactions, and deeper state outreach
In 2025-26 till July the GeM facilitated transactions worth Rs 1.41 lakh crore and processed 20,12,636 orders. Last financial year the contracts worth Rs 5.42 lakh crore were processed through GeM. Since its launch more than 3 crore orders worth 14.81 lakh crore have been facilitated over GeM.
The GeM has been adopted across 36 states and Union Territories and the platform is constantly encouraging states to deepen their engagement for more competitive bids.
The portal will reach out to more and more states for its greater adoption, The GeM CEO said.
