Despite being an industrial hub and a growing vibrant metropolis and also earning a sizeable amount of Foreign Exchange by way of exports, Coimbatore region lags far behind in infrastructure provided by Indian Railways.
In a memorandum to Southern Railway General Manager Ashok Agarwal, Indian Chamber of Commerce and Industry president D Nandakumar said they had often represented for introduction of an exclusive overnight Express Train between Coimbatore and Bengaluru.
A train is being run between Yeswantpur and Coimbatore weekly twice on Thursday and Saturday nights, which passengers find inconvenient, it said.
The Chamber said it has received representations from various sectors, stating that the service should be run on Wednesday and Sunday nights, as there would be three clear days to do business and return to their destinations.
At present,a summer special train is run between Chennai and Coimbatore on Friday night and Sunday night, which was very convenient and helped clear the summer rush.
Stating that Railways may withdraw this special service by this month end, the chamber requested Agarwal to extend it for another three months as it would help Medical and Engineering students attend counselling.
