If you still have a Rs 2,000 note, there is no need to panic. Though the RBI confirmed that 98.26 percent of the Rs 2000 notes have been returned to the Reserve Bank of India, it clarified that it is still a legal tender.
Why do you need to exchange a Rs 2,000 note?
The central bank said in a statement that the total value of Rs 2000 notes in circulation stands at Rs 6181 crore as of May 31, 2025.
The Reserve Bank had issued an order for the withdrawal of Rs 2000 notes on May 19, 2023. At that time, the total value of Rs 2000 notes was Rs 3.56 lakh crore. The central bank had issued an order to exchange or deposit the notes in all the bank branches by October 7, 2023.
The Rs 2000 notes are still legal tender, the RBI clarified in the statement.
How to exchange if you still have Rs 2000 notes
The Central Bank has issued guidelines to deposit the Rs 2000 notes in the 19 designated Issue Offices of the Reserve Bank of India. The offices are located in Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Belapur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jammu, Kanpur, Kolkata, Lucknow, Mumbai, Nagpur, New Delhi, Patna, and Thiruvananthapuram.
Further, if the bearer cannot go to the Issue Office in person, he/she can send the notes to these Issue Offices via Indian Post from any post office in the country. The exchange money will be credited to the bearer’s bank account.
