A small-time hood with big ambitions, wanting to become ‘Bambai Ka Raja’. A honey-voiced Goan girl, heart set on being a star. A city on the cusp of explosive growth, swarming with venal babus, greedy businessmen, beady-eyed landsharks and cops-in-cahoots.

Based on historian Gyan Prakash’s excellent original work (he’s also co-written the movie), ‘Bombay Velvet’ is the story of all these characters trying to find their place in the late 60s Bombay. It was the era of Prohibition, rising brawny action heroes, flashy media moguls parlaying power and gossip, jazz bars spilling over with illicit liquor and dirty money, and rapacious builders.

Opening weekend collection: Rs 16.10 crore (Image: Bollywood Hungama)

Anjaana-Anjaani is – a lifeless, drama-less saga of two self-centered individuals whose motivations, forget being logical or sensible, are cold, calculated, callow and incredibly insensitive, except about each other’s feelings – that too when they finally start caring for each other. Trouble is, we don’t even start caring for them, a state of affairs fatal for any form of storytelling, and this blame lies expressly at the door of the scriptwriters and director.

Opening weekend collection: Rs 20.51 crore (Image: Bollywood Hungama)

Prakash Jha's 'Raajneeti' talks of warring cousins, dynastic rule and electoral politics of the Hindi heartland, besides the vicious and horrifying games some people play to attain power. It is a human drama, a complex game that people indulge in to achieve power and how this greed envelopes them and transforms them into ruthless and conniving humans.

Opening weekend collection: Rs 33.63 crore (Image: Bollywood Hungama)

Just the fact that this film's chief focus is on two people who cannot communicate the way you and I do, makes it automatically different. Barfi! comes out of mainstream Bollywood, whose standard idea of creating difference is to shuffle one step forward, two steps back: given that context, and its subject, Barfi! does take several brave strides. It's good in many ways; what stops it from being a great film is a degree of fuzziness, and an insistence on prettiness.

Opening weekend collection: Rs 34.60 crore (Image: Bollywood Hungama)
