Indian hopes are now riding on both Sania and Rohan to fetch a medal, preferably gold for the country. That hope really got some encouragement as they were not made to even sweat in their opening round match as they posted a 7-5 6-4 triumph in just 73 minutes. (PTI)

The conditions for the players were not ideal because the temperatures plummeted. The match was also delayed well beyond 3.30pm local time because of the men's doubles semifinals featuring Rafael Nadal and Marc Lopez – the match lasted over two hours. First set saw no dropped point and it was only in the ninth game that Peers' serve was broken. The Indians were leading 5-4 and served for the set. However, a lapse of concentration allowed Oz to break back immediately against the run of play. Thee dominance of the Indians came back into force right after that momentary lapse in concentration to break back and take four straight points on Stosur's weak service – the first set lasted 36 minutes. The power shots India were now unleashing were leaving the Australians standing flatfooted allowing Sania and Rohan to race to a 4-2 lead. The 10th game was the last nail in the Oz coffin, in a manner of speaking, as Bopanna slammed three aces. It was a massive win and will give the Indian duo a lot of confidence ahead of stiffer challenges. (PTI)

Sania Mirza said this after the match, "For me it would be amazing to win a medal at the Olympics. It would mean the world us. We would do whatever we can and put our best forward." Now that the Indian pair has qualified for the quarters, it will come face to face with the Great Britain duo – the iconic Andy Murray and Heather Watson.
