<br>Nayantara Sahgal questions PM Modi 'silence', returns Sahitya award</br> <br>Eminent author and niece of Jawaharlal Nehru, Nayantara Sahgal today returned the Sahitya Akademi award in protest against increasing intolerance towards right to dissent in the country and Prime Minister Narendra Modi's "silence" on the "reign of terror". Nayantara Sahgal, who received a Sahitya Akademi award in 1986 for her English novel 'Rich Like Us (1985)', said, "The ruling ideology today is a fascist ideology and that is what is worrying me now. We did not have a fascist government until now… I am doing whatever I believe in." Citing various incidents of killings of writers and rationalists including M M Kalburgi and Govind Pansare, she alleged, "Rationalists who question superstition, anyone who questions any aspect of the ugly and dangerous distortion of Hinduism known as Hindutva whether in the intellectual or artistic sphere, or whether in terms of food habits and lifestyle are being marginalised, persecuted, or murdered." <br>VHP 'bans' non-Hindus from attending garba events</br> <br>With the nine-day Navratri festival round the corner, the VHP has issued a diktat not to allow non-Hindus, including Muslims and Christians, at garba events in residential societies across Gujarat. The right-wing Hindu organisation said its volunteers will keep a close watch at the garba venues across the state to see whether non-Hindus were trying to enter the venues. Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) further said that those Muslims, who still want to enjoy garba, will be given an option to "embrace Hinduism" at the venue. Gujarat VHP's general secretary Ranchhod Bharwad told reporters here today that the ban on non-Hindus is applicable at small garba events organised in residential societies only and not at the clubs and other commercial events. <br>Indian Railways to cancel, divert trains from Oct 7-10 in Punjab</br> <br>A day ahead of Punjab farmers' 'Rail Roko' protest, Railways today announced cancellation and diversion of several trains due to non-interlocking work being carried out at Asaoti in Delhi Division. Indian Railways announced cancellation of six trains and diversion of nine on October 7 and 8, an official release issued here said. Among the trains which were cancelled are Amritsar-Indore Express, Ferozpur-Mumbai Central Express, Indore-Chandigarh and Mumbai Central-Ferozpur Express. Among the diverted trains are Amritsar-Bilaspur, Nanded- Amritsar and Bilaspur-Amritsar Express, it said. Railways have also announced cancellation of 7 trains, including Chandigarh-Indore Express, Ferozpur-Mumbai Central Express, Kochuveli-Amritsar Express and Yasvantpur-Chandigarh Express on October 9 and 10, it said. <br>Panel recommends hefty salary hike for Delhi MLAs from Rs 88,000 to Rs 2,10,000</br> <br>Salary and allowances of Delhi MLAs may see a whopping two-and-half fold hike from current Rs 88,000 per month to Rs 2.10 lakh if recommendations of an expert panel are accepted by the government. The panel favours a 400 per cent hike in basic salary of MLAs from Rs 12,000 to Rs 50,000 per month. Overall, the hike recommended has been 138 per cent. The committee has recommended to increase the existing salary of MLAs from Rs 12,000 per month to Rs 50,000 per month. <br>Indrani Mukerjea back to jail from hospital; ready for CBI quizzing</br> <br>Former media magnate Indrani Mukerjea, prime accused in the Sheena Bora murder case, was today discharged from J J Hospital, where she has been under treatment since Friday after falling unconscious, and shifted to Byculla Women's Prison. J J Hospital Dean T P Lahane said Indrani was discharged from the hospital this evening and moved to the prison, where she is lodged under judicial custody since last month. The High Court is hearing an appeal filed by the actor against his conviction and five-year sentence in the case where he was found guilty of ramming his Toyota Land Cruiser into a shop in suburban Bandra, killing one person and injuring four others on September 28, 2002.
