Once the recommendations of the Bibek Debroy Committee get implemented, be prepared to board a private train that will compete with the Indian Railways to transport you. Before that happens, expect seismic changes in the way the railways function—right from commercial accounting, HR changes and facing the diktat of an independent regulator. By then, the world’s fourth largest rail network will focus only on its core function of running trains while all other offline activities will be separated. At the end of it, the railways, as we know it, could be an entirely different entity. But the problem is even the Debroy panel is not very optimistic about a quick turnaround.
