The last week of August 2025 is not going to be a full trading week for Dalal Street. Investors will get just four working days to trade as the markets prepare for a mid-week break for Ganesh Chaturthi.
Markets to stay shut mid-week
Both the NSE and BSE will remain closed on Wednesday, August 27, on account of Ganesh Chaturthi.
This means that the trading activity across equities, equity derivatives, securities lending and borrowing (SLB), currency derivatives, and electronic gold receipts (EGR) will be suspended for the day.
Ganesh Chaturthi, celebrated with devotion and community festivities across the country, will once again bring a pause to trading screens, reminding investors that festivals, too, shape the rhythm of the markets.
Regular sessions will resume on Thursday, August 28.
MCX shut on Ganesh Chaturthi
The commodities exchange, MCX will also remain shut for Ganesh Chaturthi on August 27. There will be no trade settlement that day.
A packed holiday calendar
Ganesh Chaturthi marks the second market holiday in August 2025 after Independence Day, when trading was closed on August 15.
Adding to this, the final week of August has two more non-trading days, that is, Saturday, August 30, and Sunday, August 31. This effectively reduces market operations to only four sessions in the week.
Upcoming stock market holidays in 2025
After August, the next set of market holidays will be in October.
Trading will remain shut on October 2 for Gandhi Jayanti. Apart from this, again on October 21 and 22 for Diwali celebrations.
A special one-hour muhurat trading session will be held on October 21, as per tradition, with exact timings to be announced by the exchanges.
Beyond October, the markets will also stay shut on November 5 for Prakash Gurpurab Sri Guru Nanak Dev, and later on December 25 for Christmas.
When does the stock market open and close?
Trading on Indian stock exchanges takes place from Monday to Friday, while markets remain closed on Saturdays, Sundays, and pre-declared holidays. The action starts early with a pre-open session at 9:00 AM, where investors can place or modify orders until 9:08 AM The main market opens at 9:15 AM. and runs until 3:30 PM, covering the normal and limited physical markets.
Special sessions in a trading day
Apart from the regular hours, the exchanges also have short special windows. The block deal session, used by big investors for bulk trades, is open twice a day, that is, from 8:45 AM to 9:00 AM in the morning and again from 2:05 PM to 2:20 PM in the afternoon. After regular trading ends, there is also a closing session between 3:40 PM and 4:00 PM, where investors can place orders at the day’s closing price.
