Yahoo has now enabled users to use fingerprint scanner technology to open the inbox, in its app for Android. This new Yahoo Mail update is available on the Play Store. Users of this app will be able to use fingerprint scan on their smartphones as a passcode to open the app. Beefing up the security measures, Yahoo also put the option of custom password option for the application. In this latest update, users also get the option of making changes in the account information and editing of contact details, directly from the app itself. These are tough times for the tech giant Yahoo. Recently the company has faced scrutiny over cyber attacks. In one of the biggest leaks from a single email provider, the email details of half a billion people were exposed. It was only recently that Yahoo was bought by Verizon for $5 billion and now it is facing such cyber attacks. According to Yahoo, it has almost 1 billion monthly users.
Fingerprint API is present in the Nexus 6P and 5X and expected to be there for the latest Pixel smartphones. It is also present in other Android devices which have a fingerprint reader which doesn’t execute its own custom security API. The new update enables users to set fingerprint or custom passwords. Application password to access account changes and even the app as a whole can have separate passcodes and they are optional. The new update also has a new feature called Preview, which allows users to open links and videos in the app itself. That reduces the need for opening new apps or windows like YouTube.
