Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi on Saturday. The meeting was aimed at discussing the company’s plans to expand in India and subsequently the adoption of its AI tools, including Claude Code. Since June, the use of Claude Code in India has dramatically increased, almost fivefold, showing how fast India’s AI ecosystem is growing.

Anthropic announced it will open its first Indian office in Bengaluru by early 2026. This is its second office in the Indo-Pacific region after Tokyo.

PM Modi on India’s AI potential

During the meeting, Prime Minister Modi spoke about India’s rising tech ecosystem and the potential of its talented youth to drive human-centric and responsible AI transformation. He welcomed Anthropic’s move into India and assured that the partnership will improve AI capabilities across education, healthcare, and agriculture in the country. “India’s vibrant tech ecosystem and talented youth are driving AI innovation that is human-centric and responsible. We welcome Anthropic’s expansion and look forward to working together to harness AI for growth across key sectors,” PM Modi tweeted on X earlier.

Anthropic CEO praises India’s AI approach

After meeting PM Modi, Mr Amodei appreciated India’s proactive AI policies and determination to use technology for growth. He also emphasised India’s growing role in shaping the future of AI, particularly the way it uses it across important sectors that impact over a billion people. Sharing the update on X on Saturday, Amodei said, “Today I met with PM @narendramodi to discuss Anthropic’s expansion to India–where Claude Code use is up 5x since June. How India deploys AI across critical sectors like education, healthcare, and agriculture for over a billion people will be essential in shaping the future of AI.”

Major Indian companies, such as CRED, have integrated Claude Code into their workflows. Anthropic is also planning to expand support for multiple Indian languages. Soon, Claude will be accessible in Bengali, Marathi, Telugu, Tamil, Punjabi, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, and Urdu.

Karnataka’s Minister for Electronics, IT/BT, Priyank Kharge, posted on X: “Anthropic has chosen Bengaluru for its first India office, its second in the Indo-Pacific region after Tokyo. Global technology leaders continue to choose this city for its unmatched innovation environment and deep talent base.” Kharge added that Bengaluru is now ranking number 5 globally in AI and DeepTech ecosystems and hosts over 1 lakh AI professionals, which represents 50% of India’s AI talent. “ Anthropic’s arrival will further expand opportunities for local talent, R&D, and AI product development,” Kharge wrote.

Anthropic is a research and AI safety company. The company was founded in 2021 by former OpenAI employees and is focused on building reliable and interpretable AI systems. Led by siblings Dario Amodei and Daniela Amodei, Anthropic’s flagship product, Claude, is a next-generation AI assistant. India currently ranks second globally in Claude AI usage. The United States ranks first on the list. Much of the usage comes from technical and programming tasks, including mobile UI development and web app debugging.

Earlier this year, OpenAI identified India as its second-largest market after the US and introduced a ₹399 ChatGPT Go plan for extended access to GPT-5. With Anthropic’s entry, India’s AI infrastructure is set to see stronger partnerships between global AI leaders and the local developer community.
