Have you ever lost your luggage at the airport and found it tough to find them? Now you can easily find your luggage with this new Apple feature. Apple has launched ‘share item location’ a new device to help you recover and track lost items. Here’s a detailed look at the new feature.

Introducing ‘Share Item Location’

The “Share Item Location,” is created to help users track and recover lost/misplaced items easily. This feature allows you to securely share the location of AirTags or other Find My network accessories with third parties. This could include the airlines you are traveling with and also your friends and families.

So how does this feature exactly work? With the new feature you will get a link which can be shared with airlines and your known people. This link can be generated using the Find my App device app available in your Mac, iPad and iPhone. After you share the link, this link will show the current location of the item in a map. Notably, this map is interactive and provides you with real time updates. For example if the item is moved, the map will show timings of the movement along with the location. After you get the item , the sharing of the location will stop.

In addition to this the owner can also disable the feature whenever they want. The Cupertino based tech giant claims that this feature is aimed at improving customers’ traveling experience. The feature can work as a virtual assistant in finding your lost items easily. Now you don’t need  to run from here and there in search of your belongings.

The way ahead

Apple has also integrated ‘Share Item Location’ into the customer service processes of more than 15 major airlines. This includes United airways, Delta Airlines, and Singapore Airlines. Furthermore, these airlines also plan to support ‘Find My location’ data by the  end of 2024. This initiative will also help users to locate mishandled baggage/delayed luggage, with more airlines expected to join over time.

In addition to this, the ‘Share item location’ device also maintains Apple’s privacy framework as found in its ‘Find My network.’ feature. According to Apple’s official website as of now this feature is available on the iOS 18.2 public beta. The company also aims to bring a free update for iPhone Xs and newer models in future.
