While the Google Pixel 9 series boasts impressive features, one notable omission has caught the attention of many is the absence of Qi2 wireless charging. Despite the newer standard offering faster charging speeds, improved energy efficiency, and magnetic alignment capabilities, Google has opted to stick with the older Qi standard.
The company has justified its decision by stating that Qi chargers are more widely available and that Qi2 doesn’t offer significant advantages. Android Authority asked why Google’s latest Pixel 9 phones don’t come with Qi 2 support, Google said that “the older Qi protocol was more readily available on the market and that there are no tangible benefits to switching to Qi2.”
Qi2, the next-generation wireless charging standard, was officially launched in early 2023. This new technology builds upon the foundation of its predecessor, Qi1, but introduces significant improvements like the magnetic alignment for precise positioning and faster charging speeds.
Google launched its new phone series- Pixel 9- recently at its Made by Google event held at company’s headquarters. The series include three phones for the first time- Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL. The new phones come with Google’s latest custom chip Tensor G4. The Pixel 9 is backed by a 4700 mAh battery, while the Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL come with a larger 4700 mAh and 5060 mAh batteries respectively. Google claims that all models can deliver up to 24 hours of battery life on a single charge and offer up to 100 hour life on an Extreme Battery Saver mode for extended usage. All three phones support fast charging, with the Pixel 9 Pro and Pixel 9 Pro XL offering slightly faster charging speeds. The phones support wireless charging.
