Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, has unveiled plans to introduce AI-powered chats to the messaging platform along with several new features. The new features that were announced by company CEO Mark Zuckerberg at Meta Connect 2023 include AI stickers, Meta AI assistant, a universe of AI characters and more.
Starting with the AI stickers, Meta introduced new AI stickers for WhatsApp. These AI-powered stickers allow users to generate customised stickers for their chats and stories easily. Leveraging technology from Llama 2 and Emu, this feature can turn text prompts into multiple unique, high-quality stickers in seconds.
Meta AI, a new AI assistant, is introduced, available on WhatsApp that lets you interact with like a person. It is powered by custom models and leverages technology from Llama 2 and the latest large language model (LLM) research. Meta AI can provide real-time information, assist in decision-making, and even generate images within text-based chats, enhancing the overall user experience.

Meta is also adding a universe of characters that will give users access to 28 more characters, each with unique personalities and backstories. These AIs can be messaged on WhatsApp, Messenger, and Instagram. Some of these AIs will be embodied by cultural icons and influencers such as Charli D’Amelio as Coco, Dance enthusiast, Chris Paul as Perry, Pro golfer helping you perfect your stroke, Dwyane Wade as Victor, Ironman triathlete motivating you to be your best self, Izzy Adesanya as Luiz, Showy MMA prospect who can back up his trash talk, Kendall Jenner as Billie, No-BS, ride-or-die companion LaurDIY as Dylan, Quirky DIY and Craft expert and companion for Gen Z, MrBeast as Zach, Snoop Dogg as Dungeon Master and more.
Meta also plans to introduce AI Studio, a platform that supports the creation of AIs, with plans to make it available to both coders and non-coders. Developers will be able to build third-party AIs for messaging services, starting with Messenger and expanding to WhatsApp. This opens up opportunities for businesses and creators to leverage AIs for various purposes.
