Meta is looking to scale up its generative AI efforts by bringing “Meta AI” to WhatsApp in one of its biggest markets — India. The chatbot has dropped silently in the country without much fanfare hinting that it could be just internal testing and not a full-fledged rollout.
Users in India alongside a few other markets have started to notice a new Meta AI toggle within the app (set to English) that lets you have a free-flowing conversation with the chatbot based on the WhatsApp owner’s Llama model. It was initially launched in September last year followed by a WhatsApp integration in select markets like the US. The new development signals that Meta may be looking to further scale up its availability.

Being inside WhatsApp, it would be expected that Meta AI will remain as a “standalone” entity having no access to your other chats. Being a chatbot based on generative AI, it is possible that your conversion exchanges with it could be used for training purposes which is to say, Meta might have some access to it. By how much, we can’t say for sure yet.
Meta AI is designed to answer queries and respond to follow-up questions in a way very similar to how you would use ChatGPT. Meta additionally also gives you an option to generate photos through text prompts sort of like DALL-E.
The chatbot currently seems to be available to only a very limited set of users. The integration has also been spotted in a beta version of the app for both Android and iOS by WhatsApp tracker website WABetaInfo, and so, chances are more people could get the access in the near future.
