Apple has announced that the iPhone 5s is now officially obsolete, meaning it will no longer be eligible for hardware repairs. Launched in 2013, the iPhone 5s received its last OS upgrade in 2018 with iOS 12. Its standout feature was the Touch ID fingerprint sensor built into the Home button. It also introduced Apple’s first 64-bit architecture with the A7 chipset.

Simultaneously, Apple has added the sixth-generation iPod Touch, released in 2015, to its vintage category. Devices classified as vintage are eligible for repairs for an additional two years, subject to parts availability. With these updates, owners of the iPhone 5s and sixth-generation iPod Touch should consider upgrading to more current devices with active support for both hardware and software.

The latest iPhone, now in its 15th iteration, includes four models: iPhone 15, iPhone 15 Plus, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max. These models feature a bezel-less design, the Dynamic Island notification system, and USB Type-C charging. As for the iPod Touch, the sixth-generation model was the second last product of its kind, with Apple discontinuing the iPod Touch on May 10, 2022, after the release of the seventh-generation model.

This obsolescence marks the end of an era for the iPhone 5s, a device that set significant technological milestones for Apple. Its Touch ID fingerprint sensor was a pioneering feature that influenced smartphone security, while the A7 chipset’s 64-bit architecture set new standards for mobile performance. The iPhone 5s also laid the groundwork for future innovations, influencing the design and functionality of subsequent iPhone models. The iPhone 5s remains the most popular iPhone model globally, with approximately 125 million units sold worldwide.
