Sony has officially launched a new PS5 model with a removable disc drive and 1TB internal storage. Better known as PS5 “slim”, the updated variant is slightly more compact and shorter in design compared to its predecessor. The updated design notes a hike of $50 on each model.
It tends to replace the existing PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition. It is priced at $499.99, including the optical drive, while the PS5 Digital Edition is available for $449.99, in the United States. No hint on Indian pricing yet. It comes with a horizontal stand, but users can also go for a Vertical Stand at $29.99.
What’s new?
The new PS5 showcases a remarkable reduction in overall volume, exceeding 30 per cent, and a weight reduction of up to 24 per cent, contingent on the specific model you choose. Sony has introduced a protrusion on the side of the PS5 to accommodate the disc drive, and this component can be detached and exchanged with a side panel.
“There are four separate cover panels, with the top portion in a glossy look, while the bottom remains in matte,” writes Sid Shuman, senior director of SIE content communications, in a blog post.
The new PS5 model now boasts two slits on each side and dual USB-C ports at the front, a change from the single USB-C and USB-A ports found on the current PS5. Both new PS5 models also come with an increased storage capacity of 1TB, as opposed to the 825GB found in the existing PS5. Wi-Fi 6 remains on erstwhile and new models.
When will these hit markets?
The upcoming PS5 models are scheduled to be released in November. The company has stated that once the current inventory of the original PS5 is exhausted, the new models will become the exclusive option for consumers.
