Snapchat is introducing fees for users storing over five gigabytes (GB) of content in its Memories feature. Since its debut in 2016, Memories—which allows users to save photos and videos originally shared for just 24 hours—has been free. Under the new rules, anyone exceeding the five-GB limit will need to subscribe to continue accessing their saved content.
“When we first launched Memories, we never expected it to grow to what it has become today,” Snapchat said in a statement. “We want to make sure that our community can continue to store all of their Memories over the long term, so we are introducing new Memories Storage Plans to support Snapchatters with more than 5GB of Memories.”
Snapchat’s new “Memories Storage Plans” provide users with 100GB or 250GB of storage through the Snapchat+ monthly subscription, while the Snapchat Platinum plan offers a massive 5TB of storage.
Storage Plans and Pricing
Although Snap hasn’t shared India-specific rates, the global rollout indicates the following:
100GB storage plan: $1.99 per month (around Rs 165)
Snapchat+ with 250GB storage: $3.99 per month (around Rs 330)
Snap has also announced that users who exceed the free storage limit will receive 12 months of temporary storage to either download their content or switch to a paid subscription.
