Following a tariff hike on July 3, 2024, Jio raised the threshold for accessing unlimited 5G data under its “Jio Welcome Offer.”

Reliance Jio has silently introduced three new “true unlimited upgrade” prepaid plans, offering users more affordable access to unlimited 5G data. These new booster packs, priced at Rs 51, Rs 101, and Rs 151, can be purchased in conjunction with an existing plan.

Following a tariff hike on July 3, 2024, Jio raised the threshold for accessing unlimited 5G data under its “Jio Welcome Offer.” Now, only plans with 2GB of data per day or more are eligible for the unlimited 5G perk. However, the new true unlimited upgrade plans eliminate this restriction, allowing users on 1GB/day and 1.5GB/day plans to also enjoy the service.

The Rs 51 plan includes 3GB of 4G data and unlimited 5G, provided the user has a 5G-supported device and resides in an area where Jio True 5G services are available. The Rs 101 plan offers 6GB of 4G data alongside unlimited 5G, while the top-tier Rs 151 plan provides 9GB of 4G data plus unlimited 5G.

Jio has removed the Rs 61 “5G upgrade” add-on plan, which allowed users to try its 5G services with any active plan and came with a 6GB data cap. This plan appears to have been replaced by the Rs 101 plan following the recent price hike.

Previously, users could activate Jio’s Welcome Offer with any prepaid or postpaid plan of Rs 239 or above. However, Jio has increased the price of the Rs 239 prepaid plan by Rs 60 and removed the unlimited 5G benefit from it. The plan now only offers 1.5GB of daily data without any additional perks.

To access unlimited 5G, customers now need to opt for higher-priced plans. The most affordable prepaid plan with 2GB/day data is now Rs 349. The newly launched true unlimited upgrade plans aim to make 5G access more affordable for Jio customers, providing an alternative for those looking to maximize their data usage without significantly increasing their expenses.

These changes reflect Jio’s strategic shift in its 5G offerings, balancing between maintaining its customer base and managing the increased costs associated with providing high-speed 5G services. By introducing these new booster packs, Jio is attempting to cater to a wider audience, ensuring that more users can experience the benefits of 5G connectivity at a more manageable cost.

It would be interesting to see if Bharti Airtel also follows suit and rolls out similar 5G upgrade plans for its customers. It, too, now offers unlimited 5G with 2GB/day and above plans.
