After much anticipation, Microsoft’s long in pursuit iPhone search deal has finally come to an end. Commenting on the same, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella said that the decade-long pursuit of an Apple search deal has finally found satisfaction in an unexpected way.

This was achieved through OpenAI’s partnership with Apple, says Nadella. “I’ve been trying to get an Apple search deal for 10 years, and so when Tim finally did a deal with Sam, I was thrilled,” Nadella explained in a recent podcast. Here’s a detailed look at the future plans.

Apple to partner with Microsoft: What this means

The collaboration between OpenAI and Apple seems to be much anticipated by Nadella. His enthusiasm stems from his company’s dual relationship with OpenAI: Microsoft serves as both a commercial partner and an investor. He further claimed, “It’s better to have ChatGPT get that deal than anybody else because we have both a commercial and investor relationship with OpenAI.”

The collaborative effort of OpenAI and Apple was initially announced at WWDC this year. The collaboration aims to use ChatGPT across Apple’s ecosystem. This includes most of Apple’s product lineup, such as iPadOS, iOS, and macOS.

The future

Microsoft briefly succeeded in powering Apple’s Siri and Spotlight searches between 2013 and 2017. However, they were never able to secure the coveted Safari browser default position.

Looking ahead, OpenAI’s new relationship with Apple could be a boon. Nadella claims this could be a silver lining in Microsoft’s decade of unsuccessful attempts. He further suggests that the outcome may align with Microsoft’s strategic interests through its OpenAI partnership.
