OpenAI to open office in THIS city amid growing demand for ChatGPT

OpenAI will open a new office in the city of Seoul, South Korea amid rising premium subscribers in the country, second to the US.

ChatGPT is witnessing unprecedented popularity and growth in the AI chatbot space across the globe. Hence, it only makes sense for the parent company, OpenAI, to establish a new office in more regions to better serve the local requirements. OpenAI has confirmed setting up its first office in Seoul and has established an entity in South Korea as demand in the country jumps for its ChatGPT service, the company said on Monday.

South Korea has the largest number of paying ChatGPT subscribers after the United States, according to OpenAI. Hence, it only makes sense for the company to honour its second-largest base of premium subscribers with a local office. OpenAI has also begun hiring staff to support partnerships with the country and expects to announce further details on this in the coming months, the company said.

“Korea’s full-stack AI ecosystem makes it one of the most promising markets in the world for meaningful AI impact, from silicon to software, and students to seniors,” Chief Strategy Officer Jason Kwon said in a statement.

Earlier this year, OpenAI announced it would develop artificial intelligence products for South Korea with chat app operator Kakao. Kwon, who is visiting Seoul, is set to hold a meeting with officials from the main opposition Democratic Party and the ruling People Power Party, local media reported.

OpenAI is on a roll lately

Prior to this development, another big news involving OpenAI and its future plans emerged. In a historic partnership, OpenAI joined hands with legendary ex-Apple designer Jony Ive to work on future hardware projects. Ive, who played an instrumental role in designing landmark products like the iPhone, iMac, iPod, the Apple Park building and more, is now collaborating with Sam Altman and his team to design a new AI companion device.

This new unnamed AI companion device promises to integrate generative AI with everyday lives. The device, similar to the discontinued Humane AI Pin, will do away with screens and rely solely on other input methods (like voice and hand gestures) to let users interact with the machine.
