OpenAI, Meta are close to making AI think and reason like humans, report says

Reports suggest that OpenAI and Meta plan to release more upgraded version of their AI models soon. It is believed that the new models will be able to help solve problems and take on more complex tasks.

What’s new?

Brad Lightcap, chief operating officer of OpenAI, explained in an interview with The Financial Times that the company’s next version of GPT would show progress on solving “hard problems,” such as reasoning. “I think we’re just starting to scratch the surface on the ability that these models have to reason,” Lightcap explained further.

The new AI systems from OpenAI and Meta are expected to create major progress in reasoning and planning capabilities. These upgraded language models are designed to actually think through problems, make logical deductions, and map out multi-step solutions, instead of just spouting words based on patterns.

Experts explained that creating AI models to reason and plan has the potential to be an important step toward achieving artificial general intelligence (AGI). It is believed that both Meta and OpenAI are working to achieve this.

“The company was hard at work figuring out how to get the model to talk, reason, plan, and have memory,” Joelle Pineau, vice-president, AI research, Meta, highlighted.

The road ahead

From what it is understood, the development can be worth trillions for the company that achieves it. In February, John Carmack, ex-Meta executive and virtual reality visionary, is believed to have mentioned artificial general intelligence (AGI) as AI’s “big brass ring.” He is also expected to have added that the AI market would become a trillion-dollar industry by the 2030s.

It is believed that Elon Musk had recently said that AI might  outsmart humans within two years. Furthermore, “ The total amount of sentient compute,  a concept that may refer to AI thinking and acting independently will exceed all humans in five years,” Musk concluded.
