OpenAI has unveiled a new feature for ChatGPT called ‘Instant Checkout’, which allows users to purchase items from vendors directly within the chat interface, without navigating away. Developed in collaboration with Stripe, the feature is currently available in the U.S. for Etsy sellers and will soon extend to over a million Shopify merchants.
Users can ask ChatGPT to browse products online
With Instant Checkout, users can ask ChatGPT to browse products online. Once they find an item they want, they can click the ‘Buy’ button, confirm their order, and enter all required information directly within ChatGPT. To use this feature, the products must be compatible with Agentic Commerce Protocol.
Previously, ChatGPT offered a shopping assistant that recommended products tailored to users’ preferences. However, those suggestions would link out to merchants’ websites for the purchase—similar to a Google search experience. Instant Checkout removes that extra step, enabling purchases directly in the chat.
While currently limited in functionality, OpenAI has plans to expand the feature. Future updates will include multi-item carts for buying multiple products at once, as well as broader availability across more merchants and regions.
The Agentic Commerce Protocol has been made open-source, allowing additional developers and merchants to adopt the protocol and integrate Instant Checkout in the future.
Cost of using Instant Checkout:
ChatGPT users can use Instant Checkout at no charge. Merchants, however, will pay a small fee to enable the service, though product prices themselves remain unchanged.
