HMD, or should we say Human Mobile World Devices, is kicking off its Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2024 proceedings with a “slate” of big announcements, none of which you can see in flesh right now. It’s all in the pipeline as they say, and coming later “this summer”.
The most important bit, which is the future of Nokia phones, still remains blurry if you’re wondering, even if HMD is promising it will continue to make and sell them (for how long that is the question). The company in fact has teased the return of an iconic Nokia device in May this year, which going by what little was shared on stage, appears to be yet another retro feature phone.
Speaking of retro, HMD has also tied up with Mattel on a Barbie-themed flip phone which it is planning to release in July. It will obviously be “pink” in colour and while the exact hardware hasn’t been revealed, don’t keep your hopes high if you think that it could be a foldable, or even a smartphone for that matter. HMD has made it abundantly clear that it’s a feature phone bundling style and nostalgia and focused entirely on “digital detox”.
HMD is a strong proponent of smartphone repairability and it intends to take it to the next level this year “substantially reducing the number of steps it takes to fix the screen” while launching its own branded smartphones will also start to arrive in the market starting from July. The company has also announced “HMD Fusion”, a platform that aims to bring back smartphone mods. Think Moto Mods and Project Ara.
