Nintendo revealed on Wednesday that it had shipped over 3.5 million units of the Switch 2 within just four days of its release, setting a new record as the fastest-selling console in the company’s history. In May, the gaming giant, headquartered in Kyoto, projected that Switch 2 sales would hit 15 million units by the close of the ongoing fiscal year, which wraps up in March next year.

“Fans around the world are showing their enthusiasm for Nintendo Switch 2 as an upgraded way to play at home and on the go,” Nintendo of America President and Chief Operating Officer Doug Bowser said in a statement.

Since its debut in 2017, Nintendo has moved over 152 million units of the original Switch, turning it into a gaming powerhouse thanks to blockbuster titles like The Legend of Zelda and the pandemic-era sensation Animal Crossing: New Horizons. The upgraded second-gen model, launched on June 5, builds on the original’s success with a familiar design but enhanced visuals and a larger display. It comes bundled with games such as Mario Kart World, aiming to capture both new and returning players.

Nintendo’s highly anticipated Switch 2 officially hit store shelves in selected countries on June 5. Massive crowds gathered at outlets across Japan, the United States, and other regions, highlighting the excitement around the next-gen hybrid console. Buyers can choose between two versions: the base model, retailing at $449.99 (around Rs 38,600), and a special Mario Kart World edition bundle, priced at $499.99 (approximately Rs 42,900).

Nintendo Switch 2 Display and Performance Specs:

The Nintendo Switch 2 features a significantly larger screen than the original model, boasting a 7.9-inch LCD touchscreen with full HD (1920×1080) resolution. It also supports HDR10 and offers a variable refresh rate of up to 120Hz, delivering fluid visuals for an enhanced gameplay experience. The console is equipped with 256GB of UFS internal storage, with part of that space allocated for system files. Storage can be expanded by up to 2TB, but only via microSD Express cards.

When connected to a supported television using an HDMI cable, the Switch 2 can output visuals at up to 4K (3840×2160) resolution at 60 frames per second. For even smoother frame rates, it can achieve up to 120 fps when outputting at lower resolutions such as 1080p or 1440p.
