Microsoft has announced a delay in the rollout of its “Recall” feature, an AI-driven tool designed to track computer usage. The decision comes amidst privacy concerns and will involve a preview phase within its Windows Insider Program (WIP) before wider release.

Microsoft has decided to postpone the release of its Recall feature. Initially intended to be released with Copilot+ PC users on June 18, Recall will now undergo additional scrutiny to ensure a trusted and secure experience for customers.

The Recall feature is designed to track various activities on a computer, ranging from web browsing to voice chats. It creates a detailed history of these activities, storing them locally on the computer. This history serves as a convenient archive that you can search through when they need to recall specific actions or information, even if they occurred months earlier. Essentially, Recall acts as a memory aid, allowing users to easily retrieve past activities or conversations they may have forgotten.

“Recall will now shift from a preview experience broadly available for Copilot+ PCs on June 18, 2024, to a preview available first in the Windows Insider Program (WIP) in the coming weeks. Following receiving feedback on Recall from our Windows Insider Community, as we typically do, we plan to make Recall (preview) available for all Copilot+ PCs coming soon,” Microsoft wrote in a blog post.

Copilot+ PCs represent a new category of personal computers unveiled in May equipped with artificial intelligence (AI) functionalities. Microsoft’s Windows Insider Program (WIP) serves as a platform for software testing, granting millions of Windows enthusiasts early access to upcoming system features.

Microsoft is announcing a change in its approach to ensure that the Recall meets the company’s high standards for quality and security. The company aims to refine the user experience before making Recall available to all Copilot+ PC users.
