Microsoft has launched a new cloud-based desktop device called Windows 365 Link, which is designed to compete with compact PCs like Apple’s Mac mini. According to the company claims, the device offers fast connectivity to Windows 365, enabling users to quickly access a high-fidelity experience without the need for local data storage. The device measures 120 mm by 120 mm by 30 mm.
Windows 365 Link features passwordless authentication through Microsoft Entra ID, with no local data stored on the device, preventing the risk of data theft. The device supports adminless users, allowing for a simplified and secure environment. Additionally, it is designed for easy setup, with configuration possible within minutes. IT teams can manage the devices alongside other PCs through Microsoft Intune, ensuring seamless integration into existing workflows.
One of the key environmental highlights of the Windows 365 Link is its sustainability. The device contains a minimum of 50% recycled content and comes in 100% paper-based packaging. It’s designed to be long-lasting and repairable, aligning with Microsoft’s commitment to sustainability.
Targeted at organisations using or considering Windows 365, Windows 365 Link is ideal for shared workspaces, such as hot desks, call centers, reception areas, and labs. It allows for secure, efficient productivity without the need for powerful hardware.
Currently, a preview of the device is available in select countries, including the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, Australia, and New Zealand. General availability is expected in the first half of 2025.
To use Windows 365 Link, organisations must be using Windows 365 with Microsoft Intune and Microsoft Entra ID, and meeting the existing Windows 365 requirements. The device is compatible with Windows 365 Enterprise, Windows 365 Frontline, and Windows 365 Business, but does not support Azure Virtual Desktop or Microsoft Dev Box.
