Microsoft announces that it will start testing ads inside the Start menu on Windows 11. The software maker is expected to use the recommended section of the Start menu, which usually shows file recommendations, to suggest apps from the Microsoft Store.

Microsoft’s move to test ads in the Windows 11 Start menu and integrate app recommendations from Windows 10 can be a strategic leap forward in user engagement. By leveraging prime digital real estate within the Start menu, Microsoft plans to tap into a valuable touchpoint for reaching consumers in a non-intrusive yet impactful manner.  Furthermore, “This will appear only for Windows Insiders in the Beta Channel in the US and will not apply to commercial devices (devices managed by organisations),” Microsoft  explained.

What’s new!

From what it is understood, Microsoft’s decision to test ads in the Windows 11 Start menu might depend on how well it’s received by users. Experts believe that while ads could provide additional revenue streams for Microsoft, they can also lead to user dissatisfaction if perceived as intrusive or disruptive. It’s crucial for Microsoft to carefully monitor user feedback and ensure that the ads enhance, rather than detract from, the user experience.

Additionally “Limiting the ads to Windows Insiders in the Beta Channel and excluding commercial devices may help mitigate potential backlash and allow Microsoft to gauge the effectiveness of the ads before wider implementation. Ultimately, the success of this initiative will hinge on Microsoft’s ability to strike the right balance between monetisation and user satisfaction,” Yasin Hamidani, director, Media Care Brand Solutions, highlighted.

Industry reacts

Industry experts believe that this initiative not only opens up new avenues for advertisers to connect with their target audience but also enhances the overall user experience by providing relevant and personalised recommendations. “As we navigate the ever-evolving landscape of digital marketing, these innovations underscore Microsoft’s commitment to driving meaningful interactions and delivering value to both users and advertisers alike. It’s an exciting step towards creating more dynamic and engaging digital ecosystems,” Sahil Chopra, founder and CEO- iCubesWire, said.

Experts believe that integrating ads into the Windows 11 Start menu represents a pragmatic shift for Microsoft towards a more monetised user experience, aligning with industry trends seen in other platforms. “While it potentially enhances product integration and upsells services, it’s imperative that user choice and the intrusiveness of such ads are carefully balanced. The effectiveness and acceptability of these ads will largely depend on their relevance and the value they bring to the user, versus the perceived disruption to the user experience,” Ambika Sharma, founder and MD, Pulp Strategy, concluded.
