Micromax, the only Indian company among top 10 handset makers globally, has announced the launch of its new flagship, the Canvas Sliver 5, which it claims is the world’s thinnest and lightest phone. While there do exist thinner phones, Micromax claims no other model is 5.1-mm thin end to end, devoid of camera bumps. And the phone’s weight, at 95 grams, also makes it the lightest.
While Micromax CEO Vineet Taneja said that every component of the phone was being streamlined to keep it thin and save battery life, the slightly expensive price tag of Rs 17,999 might work against it.
Taneja said the 4.8-inch AMOLED screen with an integrated touch panel and the ultra-thin PCB makes the phone slimmer than normal. The handset also uses aircraft-grade aluminium for the frame, which makes it lighter.
Taneja said the three pillars of the company will be design, performance and after-sales service. “Going forward, you will see a lot of innovation in customer service,” he said. The company is pioneering a new service policy with the phone and will start doorstep pick-up for service and guaranteed return in seven days. “That is the promise we make and this will become the industry standard,” added Taneja.
Canvas Sliver 5 is powered by a 64-bit Qualcomm Snap dragon 401 processor and will be 4G/LTE enabled. There is an 8MP camera with a Sony IMX219 sensor and blue glass filter. It has a 5 mp front camera. Canvas Sliver 5 has a 2000 mAh battery, but the company claims every other component reduces power consumption, making it last an entire day. The Sliver comes with 516GB ROM, which cannot be expanded, and 2GB RAM.
Hollywood star Hugh Jackman will be back to promote the phone.
