Threads, Meta’s close-friends-focused messaging app, now allows users to independently delete their accounts without having to delete their Instagram accounts. This is a major change from the previous system, where the two accounts were linked and could not be deleted separately.
The new feature comes after many users complained that they wanted to be able to use Threads without having to be tied to Instagram. Some users said they didn’t like the idea of their Threads messages being connected to their Instagram accounts, while others said they simply didn’t use Instagram anymore.
The update was announced by Adam Mosseri on his Threads channel. Explaining the process, he wrote that to delete your Threads profile, you first have to go to Settings>Account> Delete or Deactivate Profile then select delete.

The new feature has started still rolling out to users, and is expected to be available to everyone within the next few weeks. Once you have deleted your Threads account, your messages and profile will be permanently deleted. You will not be able to recover your account or messages once they have been deleted.
The ability to independently delete Threads accounts gives users more control over their privacy. Users can now choose to use Threads without having to worry about their messages being connected to their Instagram accounts.
This also makes Threads more accessible to users who don’t use Instagram. Previously, users had to have an Instagram account in order to sign up for Threads. This limited the app’s appeal to a wider audience.
Mosseri along with this update, also announced the feature that makes it easy for people to see Threads posts directly on Facebook and Instagram. He wrote that it will help expand your audience and grow your reach. “We heard feedback that you want more control over the experience, so we’re rolling out a way to opt out of being featured outside Threads in Settings → Privacy,” he said.
