Meta, the parent company of Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram, is set to introduce artificial intelligence (AI) chatbots this week, featuring distinct personalities to appeal to youngsters.

According to a report by Wall Street Journal, Meta is internally testing new AI bots with a goal to increase user engagement and take a leap in the ongoing AI race. These AI bots are expected to be unveiled at the Meta Connect conference starting this Wednesday. The report states that while the primary goal is to enhance user engagement, some of these chatbots may also possess productivity-related skills, such as assisting with coding.

Meta plans to create several AI personality chatbots and is also working on a product that allows celebrities and creators to utilise their own AI chatbots to interact with fans. Among these chatbots is “Bob the robot,” designed to have a sassy and humorous personality similar to the character Bender from “Futurama.” The internal documents describe it as superior intellect, sharp wit, and biting sarcasm.”

Meta has made several developments in the AI space, especially in the past few months. The company in August started using a new process called Shepherd to crack down on inaccurate information spread by generative AI.

Meta’s new Shepherd LLM is designed to analyse other LLM’s responses, give suggestions and refinements.

“At the core of our approach is a high quality feedback dataset, which we curate from community feedback and human annotations. Even though Shepherd is small (7B parameters), its critiques are either equivalent or preferred to those from established models including ChatGPT. Using GPT-4 for evaluation, Shepherd reaches an average win-rate of 53-87% compared to competitive alternatives. In human evaluation, Shepherd strictly outperforms other models and on average closely ties with ChatGPT,” describes Meta.
