Elon Musk’s social media platform X suffered a significant global outage on Saturday, leaving tens of thousands of users unable to access the app or website for several hours. The disruption began around 5:45 PM IST, causing widespread frustration among users across India, the United States and Canada, among other countries.

Shortly after services were restored, Musk responded to a post about the outage, admitting, “As evidenced by the X uptime issues this week, major operational improvements need to be made.”

Musk further wrote that he is back to work and needs to remain “super focused” as several big developments are approaching on the work front. “Back to spending 24/7 at work and sleeping in conference/server/factory rooms. I must be super focused on X/xAI and Tesla (plus Starship launch next week), as we have critical technologies rolling out,” he said.

Earlier, tracking platform Downdetector reported a sharp spike in complaints just before 6:00 PM. In the US alone, over 25,000 users flagged problems, with 68% struggling to log in, 24% facing app issues and 8% reporting website errors. In Canada, over 2,200 users reported similar disruptions.

Many users encountered error messages like “Something went wrong. Try reloading”, or experienced constant buffering when trying to post or refresh content. This marks the second major disruption this year, following a March 10 outage that Musk later attributed to a “massive cyberattack.”

Why is X down?

The recent outages have been linked to a fire at one of X’s data centers in Oregon, according to a report by Wired. The incident occurred on Thursday morning and involved batteries in one of the data center’s rooms, prompting a prolonged emergency response. While Friday’s service disruption was relatively limited, Saturday’s outage was more extensive, impacting tens of thousands of users worldwide.
