Amidst the rising cybersecurity concerns, Google has come up with a safety feature for detecting scams. According to 9to5Google, Google will launch a real-time scam detection feature. Notably this feature is only available for Pixel devices.

The tech giant aims to reduce the rising number of scams that are taking place through spam/unknown calls. The upcoming feature will help to identify such scams at an early stage. Here’s how the feature can change your calling experience.

Detect scam in real time!

Google’s new scam detection will help Pixel users to detect scam in real time. So, how does this feature exactly work? The scam detection listens for the patterns of our conversation. These are then referred to ‘existing scam calls,’ patterns. This helps to differentiate between a genuine call and a scam. Once a scam call is recognised, the feature then prompts you an alert. The message somewhat reads like ‘ Likely scam,’ if its a scam. In case the call is genuine it shows you ‘Not a scam.’ In addition to this if any suspicious call is detected , it will show “Suspicious activity detected for this call” along with an “End call” button. You will also get the option to mark a call as ‘spam.’ or ‘not spam.’

Furthermore, the ‘Scam Detection’ is powered by Gemini Nano on the Pixel 9 series. Pixel 6-8a users will also get this feature. Coming to safety and security concerns, Google claims that no audio transcription or audio conversation will be stored/recorded. Also these calling data will not be available in any Google servers and even it can’t be retrieved.

Other updates

As of now the Scam Detection is rolling out now to “English-speaking Phone by Google public beta users in the U.S. with a Pixel 6 or newer device.” But how to use the feature?  You can enable the feature from Google Phone app Settings. First go to the settings. There you will find the  ‘Scam Detection’ feature. Choose that and you are ready to go.

In other news, Google Play Protect’s live threat detection will also send a real-time “Unsafe app found” if some spam/scam is detected. In addition to this the tech giant is also focusing on stalkerware . Notably, Stalketware is a code that can secretly collect personal or sensitive data for monitoring purposes without your consent.
